HMS Caroline - 8th Sep 2010

Vessel Name: HMS Caroline

Vessel Weight: – Just under 10,000 ton

Description: Lucion Marine were approached by the Ministry of Defense to carry out a full inventory of hazardous materials on HMS Caroline in March 2010. The vessel was docked in Belfast harbor, Northern Ireland.  HMS Caroline is the MoD’s oldest still surviving ship, built and put into service during 1914.  A marine survey team of two people worked onboard Caroline surveying and sampling for a number of hazards including asbestos, PCB’s, TBT’s, radiation, and CFC’s.  Extra care had to be taken throughout the vessel so as not to disturb or damage any of the historical equipment, including the original 1914 engine components.  As part for future works, the vessel is undergoing a 3 million pound refurbishment project to convert her into a public museum.  Lucion have subsequently been awarded the remedial works on board to remove and make safe the hazards to allow for further contractual conversion works to enhance her to her former glory.
