HMS Ramehead - 8th Sep 2010

Vessel Name: HMS Ramehead

Vessel Weight: – 10,000 ton

Description: Lucion Marine were approached by the Ministry of Defense to carry out an asbestos management survey on Ramehead in 2007 prior to its final decommissioning process. The vessel was docked in Portsmouth, out in the yard, where a military taxi boat was used to gain access.  The project took 3 weeks to complete for 2 marine surveyors, and Lucion were responsible for all off shore power and lighting for the vessel, including making it safe to work on. The vessel contained over 400 tonnes of raw asbestos, mainly within the main machinery spaces.  The military had been using the boat as a live firing range since it was disused for full service back in the 1960’s.  Once the survey had been completed, Lucion were contracted to manage the safe removal and deposal of the asbestos prior to the ships selling and final sale to its dismantling yard in Belgium in 2008.  The removal project involved 60 contractors working around the clock for a 7 week period.
